In 1756, Portugal adopted the world’s first law on the limitation of a cultivation area, the port wine region of Alto Douro on the Douro. The destruction of the cultivated areas by powdery mildew and phylloxera caused the wine production to decline, and by 1930 a reconstruction by numerous wine cooperatives began. The revolution of the Carnation and the opening up of the European Community finally led to a renaissance of the Portuguese wine-growing culture. The most internationally renowned product was the Mateus Rosé, a mass-produced wine for a long time.
